Footcandle Film Festival is “putting Hickory on the international map”

chrisfryealanjackson-largeFeeding film addictions across the City of Hickory for the last eight years is Footcandle Film Society. It is the brainchild of two self-proclaimed “movie nerds” who wanted to bring an additional art form to Hickory.

Alan Jackson and Chris Frye would frequently drive to Winston-Salem and Charlotte to see films that were not airing in Hickory. They wanted to find a way to bring those films to Hickory to share with the rest of the community. After they created Footcandle, they invited close friends and family to their office to watch films and discuss them after.

Film Festival comes to SALT Block Auditorium

Footcandle Film Fest LaurelsThe area’s first weekend-long film festival — the Footcandle Film Festival — will be coming to the SALT Block Auditorium September 25th through the 27th.  The festival will feature eleven feature-length films and fourteen short films during the weekend, along with a special opening night event and a closing awards ceremony.  The festival is being held by the Footcandle Film Society, a local non-profit film screening and discussion group that currently has over 550 local members, in partnership with the Hickory Museum of Art.

“Furniture. Well Crafted”

Well Crafted.” Design Competition named during November 5 receptionFrom traditional to contemporary, in colors from bright orange-yellow based patchwork to soft white leather, the 23 chairs in the inaugural “Furniture. Well Crafted.” Design Competition made an exceptional impression to furniture makers and executives, journalists for furniture publications, and local officials earlier this week. The 23 chairs represent the entire Hickory Metro which includes cities and towns in Catawba, Alexander, Burke, and Caldwell Counties. The chairs arrived at the SALT Block in the North Lobby next to Catawba Science Center’s “Furniture. Well Crafted.” exhibit on November 3. All labels were removed from the chairs and numbered 1 to 23.

Oktoberfest always happens on the second weekend in October. 2014’s festival happens on Friday, October 10 (5:00 pm to 11:00 pm with lunch served in the Food Court at noon), Saturday, October 11 (10:00 am to 11:00 pm) and Sunday, October 12 (Noon until 5:00 pm). There will be a foot race, amusement rides, food, shopping, arts and crafts, demonstrations and of course, music!
