Footcandle Film Festival is “putting Hickory on the international map”

chrisfryealanjackson-largeFeeding film addictions across the City of Hickory for the last eight years is Footcandle Film Society. It is the brainchild of two self-proclaimed “movie nerds” who wanted to bring an additional art form to Hickory.

Alan Jackson and Chris Frye would frequently drive to Winston-Salem and Charlotte to see films that were not airing in Hickory. They wanted to find a way to bring those films to Hickory to share with the rest of the community. After they created Footcandle, they invited close friends and family to their office to watch films and discuss them after.

Southern Living’s Best Restaurant of 2015 names Highland Avenue Restaurant

The text from Southern Living’s article read, “At executive chef Kyle McKnight’s restaurant, the commitment to local sourcing is visible not only on plates but in glasses as well. The bar program highlights a number of North Carolina spirits, like TOPO Vodka from Chapel Hill, and Mother Earth Gin from Kinston, North Carolina. At tables, expect to see McKnight utilize Southern ingredients in fun ways, like pork belly with a sweet onion buttermilk vichyssoise or green beans garnished with smoked peanuts.”

According to Maestro John Gordon Ross, “the theme of the Fall Pops! is “Dance Machine.” Maestro Ross and the orchestra will perform a wide range of “dance” music that spans several hundred years.

Bustling Downtown Arts Scene

The Galleria, the museum’s shop, also provides an important venue from which artists can sell their work. But in recent years, the arts community has grown beyond anyone’s expectations, and artists have been in need of new places to both gather and sell their work. A quiet renaissance has been occurring downtown, not on Union Square, but one block over, where Bottega and Turnip the Arts have put down roots. They join Full Circle Arts and Tasteful Beans in bringing art to downtown and supporting artists from the Catawba Valley.
