Well Crafted.” Design Competition named during November 5 receptionFrom traditional to contemporary, in colors from bright orange-yellow based patchwork to soft white leather, the 23 chairs in the inaugural “Furniture. Well Crafted.” Design Competition made an exceptional impression to furniture makers and executives, journalists for furniture publications, and local officials earlier this week. The 23 chairs represent the entire Hickory Metro which includes cities and towns in Catawba, Alexander, Burke, and Caldwell Counties. The chairs arrived at the SALT Block in the North Lobby next to Catawba Science Center’s “Furniture. Well Crafted.” exhibit on November 3. All labels were removed from the chairs and numbered 1 to 23.

Hickory Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest Each year Downtown Hickory hosts Oktoberfest, the city’s largest street festival. 2015’s event will be held in October, and details will follow soon. OcktoberFest Sponsored by Hickory Downtown Development AuthorityThe excitement is building as the much anticipated 29th Annual Hickory Oktoberfest comes to Downtown Hickory. Oktoberfest always happens on the second weekend in October. 2014’s festival happens on Friday, October 10 (5:00 pm to 11:00 pm with lunch served in the Food Court at noon), Saturday, October 11 (10:00 am to 11:00 pm) and Sunday, October 12 (Noon until 5:00 pm). There will be a foot race, amusement rides, food, shopping, arts and crafts, demonstrations and of course, music!

Hickory Community Theatre

Hickory Community Theatre is a gem of a theatre located in the heart of Downtown Hickory. The building once housed the City Hall and the fire station and the space is steeped in history. HCT offers at least 9 full length shows each year, including musicals, in addition to children’s shows and one-acts.

Catawba Valley Pottery and Antiques Festival

Celebrating the Catawba Valley’s rich pottery heritage, 2014 marks the 17th annual Catawba Valley Pottery and Antiques Festival, held on Saturday, March 29, at the Hickory Metro Convention Center from from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This pottery festival brings together over 100 craftsmen, each dedicated to his craft. With 98 potters from the Southeast, and several antiques dealers, the festival houses the most extensive Catawba Valley Pottery collection in existence.

Carolina Theatre-Entertaining Hickory Since 1934

For 79 years, Carolina Theatre has stood tall and proud in the heart of Downtown Hickory, providing entertainment for the citizens of town. When it opened in 1934, the Carolina boasted state-of-the-art sound, air conditioning, which was quite a marvel at the time, and sat 746 customers. The theatre just recently upgraded to new digital projectors, and with the addition of new seats and new hardwood flooring, the theatre offers a very pleasant viewing experience.

Lenoir-Rhyne University. Education, Well Crafted.

LRULenoir-Rhyne University is a small Lutheran university, nestled in tree-lined streets in the heart of Hickory, North Carolina. The school is growing, with campuses now in three cities and new programs being developed each year. The school offers over 50 majors as well as 20 graduate programs. A physician’s assistants program will be up and running within  the next two years, and an entrepreneurial program is in the works.
