Parks

Catawba County offers many parks, each with their own amenities.

One of the most popular area parks is Glenn Hilton Park. It offers a picnic shelter, grills, nature trails, a nature boardwalk, canoe access, 2 playgrounds, a memorial garden and horseshoe pits.  What really makes this park stand out is its Disc Golf Course. People travel for hundreds of miles to go to this course. The U.F.O Disc Golf Club hosts two weekly events on the course, and 3 annual disc golf tournaments.

Another popular destination is Riverbend Park.  This park is one of the largest non-state or federal parks in North Carolina. There are 450 acres and nearly 12 miles of trails in this beautiful river basin park. There are several wildlife habitats to explore, and each offers ecological information. This park features over a mile of shoreline and a large pond for fishing. There is Canoe and kayak access to the Catawba River and several picnic areas. There is a large dog park here, and leashed dogs are welcome on all of the trails.

Bakers Mountain Park sits on the highest point of elevation in Catawba County (1780 feet). The park is 189 acres, and features forests of mature Chestnut Oaks. There are 6 miles of trails, and a large variety of wildlife and plants that are native to the North Carolina Mountains. There is an observation gazebo located at the top of the mountain that gives a beautiful view of the Catawba Valley. If hiking isn’t your style, you can still visit this park. There are several picnic shelters available to accommodate family activities.


Henry Fork River Regional Recreation Park is an exciting place to visit with children. There is an 8000 square foot picnic shelter with a catering kitchen, restrooms and tables with grills. There are seven soccer fields, an Alpine Tower, 2  playgrounds, a concession stand, a canoe launch, and a walking trail.

McGalliard Falls Park, in Valdese, North Carolina, is a popular gathering spot. There are four volleyball courts, a nature trails, picnic facilities and restrooms. Each June, the Town of Valdese holds a fishing tournament here for residents. The biggest attraction here are the beautiful waterfalls, which are quite breathtaking.
