The Catawba Valley region is ripe with business opportunities. We are the 4th largest MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area), and in 2009, a Gallup Poll named the Greater Hickory Metro Area the second best place in the country for “Work Environment”. 95% of local employers rate their workers’ productivity as good or excellent, and our workforce is 170,500.

In  2010, Forbes Magazine listed the city of Hickory, NC as the second best place in the country to start a business for its  “Cost of Doing Business”. This is the second consecutive year that Hickory has been listed in the top 3 of this category, and new businesses, accordingly, move to the area consistently.

Our location lends itself to great economic diversity.The area is intersected by I-40 and is close to I-77 and I-85. The region is within a day’s drive of 60% of the U.S. population.  We are midway between Florida and New York, and less than an hour from Charlotte. Our location has attracted major distribution centers, as well as data centers and other business types.

The Hickory, Newton, Conover region offers several education and  workforce training institutes, like  Lenoir-Rhyne University, the North Carolina Center for Engineering Technologies, The Appalachian State University Greater Hickory Partnership and Catawba Valley Community College. These schools are happy to work with large employers to ensure that their staff have proper training and education.

This region is clearly a wise choice for new business start-ups, or for relocations of businesses, and it is also a wonderful place to live. Hickory has been named All-American City 3 times, in 1967, 1987, and 2007.
